ABSTRACT

To end the new COVID-19 pandemic, most of the world's population needs to be immune to the virus, protecting individuals from infection, and ultimately ensuring herd immunity at the population level. A variety of COVID-19 vaccines have been developed worldwide for adults and children over the age of 12 years, and the effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing symptomatic diseases and hospitalization is being studied. One of the major obstacles to COVID-19 vaccination that has emerged along with the global immunization program is vaccine hesitation or disapproval. The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported vaccine hesitation as one of the 10 global health threats of 2019. This is also related to COVID-19. The present review, explore the current evidence on COVID-19 vaccination platforms and vaccination efficacy, safety, and adverse effects among strategic sub-populations, including elderly people, people with chronic disease (diabetes, cancer), pregnant and lactating women, children, youth, and vaccination willingness or hesitancy among the target population.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Extraosseous Ewing sarcomas (EESs) are rare tumors that originate from soft tissues. Upper extremity EESs account for about 3% of all cases. Here we reported a case of ESS of the upper limb whose management became complicated due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Case Presentation: A 27-year-old female with EES of the right deltoid region presented after 3 months delay when the tumor had reached a huge size. Neoadjuvant therapy was initiated for her with acceptable results, however, her surgical treatment was post-poned 3 times due to the cancellation of elective operations in the hospital as well as her involvement with COVID-19 infection. She developed multiple pulmonary metastases shortly after the surgery and passed away within a fortnight due to respiratory compli-cations. Conclusions: Although not “emergent” by definition, surgical treatment of patients with cancer, especially those who suffer from malignancies with high metastatic potential such as Ewing sarcoma (including EES), should not be considered as “elective” since the disease may progress in a short time and become incurable.

ABSTRACT

The outbreak of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) began in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, and has spread worldwide rapidly. In this case series study, we evaluated orthopedic patients who referred to the orthopedic trauma ward of Imam Hossein Hospital, Tehran, Iran, as a central hospital for both orthopedic trauma and COVID-19 patients from the beginning of the outbreak of COVID-19 in Iran. We incidentally detected six cases of COVID-19 infection during work-up for trauma management. These patients were managed and treated for both COVID-19 infection and trauma.
